Rules

I’ve never before seen the concept of rules expressed so simply as it is below.  We certainly have to know the current rules of the varying domains that we work within to be effective in any sense.  Knowing a common set of rules to sustain a functional level of bureaucracy for an organization is necessary.  That doesn’t mean the rules are permanently fixed though.  We should always think critically to craft something better, to innovate to continuously improve and adapt; then adjust the rules.

“More than ambition, more than ability, it is rules that limit contribution; rules are the lowest common denominator of human behavior. They are a substitute for rational thought.”   — Hyman G. Rickover  —
