It’s very tempting to want to purchase something with the intention that this will make us feel good about ourselves. It will be a statement about ourselves and the fine things we appreciate in life. All would certainly be impressed with our new possession.
Truth is, most others aren’t paying much attention at all. If they were, it would be for a fleeting moment or two and they move on. By purchasing the product, our sense of satisfaction is relatively short-lived and no one else really cares all that much either.
To create something presents a better and more lasting opportunity to feel good about ourselves. You share something you have learned with intention to better the life yourself and another from it. From the sharing of a creation, others will come to know more about us with the opportunity to genuinely and memorably grow from it themselves.
A memory and/or a special moment are created for a value that is satisfying for both. Our creations say a lot more about us and bring us greater and more lasting satisfaction than to have merely purchased something. To be happy and more significant, it is better to have created something to share.
“Creation is a better means of self-expression and possession; it is through creating, not possessing, that life is revealed.” — Vida Dutton Scudder —
