To learn and to appreciate the value of hard work, one would first have to have worked hard to attain something. If it were merely given to you, there is little to no sustaining value to be derived. Anything of great value comes as the result of great work.
As we look back in life at our greatest contributions, it is through great labor that we merited the greatest returns. The more we personally and passionately invest in the our labor, the greater the opportunity for us and others to realize success. When we are happy to do the work that generates a significance of our lives, we are at our best.
To labor is to generate value for oneself and others, learning form the experiences as we progress through life.
