Law of Scarcity

If a market is flooded with a particular product, the price for that product will go down.  It is also true that the more you are seen and heard from, the more common you appear.  If you are already established within a group, temporary withdrawal from it will make you more admired.  A strong presence will draw power and attention to you – but a point is reached where the more you are seen and heard from, the more your value degrades.

Look at your professional skill set in the context of the law of scarcity.  If you can deliver a very rare and hard to find set of skills, you immediately increase your value.  A premium is paid for identified professionals that possess these scarce skills that may accelerate organizational success.  Remember though, even these unique professionals will at some point be taken for granted and become like everyone else if hanging on too long.

From Baltasar Gracian 1601-1658: “Even the outstanding genius makes use of retirement so that men may honor him and so that the yearning aroused by his absence may cause him to be esteemed.”
